IAM terms and conditions

This section provides all relevant terms and conditions for any IAM charity products and services that you may purchase through the IAM website.

Important: Before any purchase is completed you will be asked to tick a box during the purchase process to indicate that you have read and accepted these terms and conditions.

This page contains information and terms and conditions for the following products;

1. Our Skill for Life programmes for car, motorcycle and commercial vehicle

2. All other IAM driving and riding products, namely; Drivecheck, Ridecheck, Momentum, Road Rider Plus and Skills Days

1. Skill for Life courses for car, commercial vehicles and motorcycles

Requirements and terms and conditions for our Skill for Life programmes

Applicants must hold a valid and current full Driving Licence which allows the applicant to drive and/or ride in the UK and EU. Holders of a provisional licence are not eligible.

When attending the first Observed Run with a Group, and the Test with an Examiner, please double check that all of your documents are in order and valid as you will be asked to sign a declaration confirming that you have all the correct documents necessary to drive or ride legally on the roads:

  1. Current valid full driving licence
  2. A fully licensed and roadworthy vehicle.
  3. The vehicle has a Certificate of Insurance
  4. An MOT Certificate (where applicable).

I declare that my eyesight meets the minimum legal requirements.

I will be deemed to be in control of the vehicle at all times.

Payment

Your first year's IAM and group Associate fees are included within the Skill for Life programme and further subscriptions will be payable annually. If the IAM test has not been passed within one year, additional IAM and IAM Group Associate fees will be payable. You will not be able to take the IAM test unless your subscriptions are up to date.

Refund policy

IAM membership and driving and riding products are non refundable once purchased except in very exceptional circumstances where the IAM has been unable to deliver the course or event promised.

The IAM may in exceptional circumstances refund the test fee paid as part of the Skill for Life programme. An application for a refund should be made via email to support@iam.org.uk or in writing to Customer Care, IAM House 510 Chiswick High Road, W4 5RG

Transfer of courses

The IAM will be happy to transfer a purchased product or course to another person at no additional cost if the original purchaser is unable to commence the course or programme. This enables us to continue to deliver our charitable objective of improving the road skills of as many people as possible.

Data Protection

The IAM and affiliated local groups will use the information you provide on this form to process your enquiry and for related purposes. Transfer of your records may be made between the IAM and its affiliated local groups. The IAM may advise you of IAM driving and, or riding products that may be of interest to you.

Specific Motorcycle Application Conditions

  1. A legal helmet with suitable eye protection and motorcycle clothing, gloves and footwear that offer impact protection must be worn when riding.
  2. Observers are unpaid volunteers and so some Groups may request a contribution to the running costs of your Observers motorcycle.
  3. Motorcycles must be capable of sustaining the national speed limit when it is safe and legal to do so.

2. IAM driving and riding products terms and conditions

These terms and conditions apply to all IAM driving and riding products – Drivecheck, Ridecheck, Momentum, Mature Driver Assessment and Skills Days.

Requirements

Please ensure that you meet the following criteria before attending your drive or ride as you will be asked to signa  declaration confirming this.

  • You have a full current valid driving licence (both parts if the photocard type)
  • Your vehicle is roadworthy and has a valid MOT if required
  • You can provide proof of insurance cover
  • Your eyesight meets the minimum legal requirement

The IAM may decline to proceed with your session if any of these conditions are not met.

Refund policy

I declare to the best of my knowledge and belief the answers given in my application or purchase are true. I agree that the IAM and Group and its officers and employees shall not be under any liability for any injury, damage or loss whatever and however caused.

3. The IAM advanced test terms and conditions

These terms and conditions apply to any advanced test provided by the IAM regardless of whether it was purchased independently or as part of a package.

The test is approximately 90 minutes duration at a mutually convenient time and location. In addition to the Examiner, there may be a third person who will not take part in the test, but is present for quality control purposes.

The vehicle used for the test must enable the applicant to demonstrate sufficiently an advanced level of driving/riding skill.

Insurance

If the vehicle is not insured by you personally, but for instance by the organisation by whom you are employed, please indicate this is the case, give particulars of insurers and of the company name and person from whom further details may be obtained.

Convictions

If you have a court case for a driving offence pending you will have to wait until the legal process is finalised before taking the test (this includes Fixed Penalty Notices).

Refunds

In the event that an applicant is unable to take the IAM test, the IAM may at its absolute discretion consider a refund of the test fee after deduction of a charge for administration. A refund will only be considered following receipt by the IAM of a request in writing explaining why the applicant is unable to take the test.

If no such request is received within 3 years of the original purchase and/or the applicant does not maintain their Associate membership of the IAM, the relevant test fee will be retained by and become the property of the IAM, to be used by it as it shall determine in furtherance of its charitable objects.

THE IAM RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DECLINE TO CONDUCT A TEST IF ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS IS NOT COMPLIED WITH.

4. IAM merchandise terms and conditions

Order Processing

Orders are normally processed within 48 hours and goods despatched within 7 days of receipt of order. Your details are passed to an external company who use your name and address data to despatch the merchandise items on our behalf. Your data is retained solely for record keeping and confirmation of despatch and orders placed.

Delivery

Please allow 7 - 14 days for delivery with the exception of engraved items which may take longer.

Postal Charges

P&P quoted is for UK Mainland despatch via Royal Mail. If you are ordering goods for delivery outside the UK, additional postage costs will be incurred.

Cancellation, Refunds and Returns

You may cancel your order within 7 days of placing it, and upon receipt of your returned goods, the IAM will make a full refund. The address for returns is

5. Privacy Statement

'IAM' means the IAM group of companies. A list of the companies within the IAM Group can be obtained from the IAM address below.

The IAM is committed to protecting your privacy. We comply with the principles of the Data Protection Act 1998 and aim to maintain consistently high levels of best practice in our processing of personal data.

How we use information you provide us

The IAM and affiliated local groups use the information we receive from you to provide goods and/or services that you request, to communicate with you, and to personalise our information sent to you. Transfer of your records may be made between the IAM and its affiliated local groups. The IAM may advise you of IAM driving and/or riding products that may be of interest to you..The IAM may from time to time make your name and address available to approved companies so that you may be informed about products or services which may be considered of interest to you. If you prefer not to receive such information please contact us.

We store all the information you provide us, including information provided via forms you complete on our website, and information which we may collect from your browsing. Our server, in common with nearly all web servers, logs each page that is downloaded from the site.

Third parties may deliver some of our products to you or provide all or part of the service requested by you. In these instances, whilst the information you provide will be disclosed to them, it will only be used for the administration of the service provided and to maintain management information for business analysis.

We ask for your home, mobile telephone number, and email address to enable us to contact you in relation to an enquiry you have made, to contact you about relevant products or services, to contact you if there is a problem with your order, or there is another genuine reason for doing so. If you provide us with credit or debit card details in order to pay for a service or product, we will keep such details secure and ensure that the details are only used for that single transaction and then securely remove them from our files. We do not retain debit or credit card details.

Occasionally, we may also use the information we collect to notify you by post, telephone, mobile telephone, email and SMS about new or existing IAM services, products and special offers we think you'll find valuable.

Generally by providing the requested data you consent to the IAM using that data for administrative purposes and for informing you of other products and services by letter, SMS, telephone and/or email.

Each time you receive marketing information or a message, you have the option to decline to receive further marketing information from us.

As required by the Data Protection Act 1998, we follow strict security procedures in the storage and disclosure of information you have given to us.

If we provide information to a third party (either a provider of a product or service, or an external data processing agency such as a mailing house) we will exercise the strictest control over the third party contractually, requiring it and any of its agents and/or suppliers to:

  • maintain the security and confidentiality of the information and restrict access to those of its own employees;
  • use the data for the agreed purpose only and prevent it being used for any other purpose by any other party;
  • refrain from communicating with you other than concerning the product in question;
  • return the data to us at the conclusion of any contract term and destroy or delete any copies made of all or any part of the information unless copies are needed to be kept to comply with regulations.

In addition, we will restrict the information disclosed to the absolute minimum necessary, for example, to provide the product or service.

Your consent

Before you provide any data to us, we will endeavour to make it clear why we need it. Sometimes we may need sensitive personal data (an example might be motoring convictions). When this is required we will obtain your consent first. Otherwise, by providing us with information, either orally or written, or by using our website, you consent to the collection, use and processing of this information by the IAM to provide and send you information about their services.

How we use cookies

"Cookies" are small pieces of information sent by a web server to a web browser, which enables the server to collect information from the browser. You can find out more about the way cookies work on www.cookiecentral.com. The IAM uses cookies for a number of purposes, for instance to enable us to simplify the logging on process for registered users, to help ensure the security and authenticity of registered users, to provide the mechanisms for online shopping and to enable traffic monitoring.

Non-registered visitors of the site are sent anonymous cookies to keep track of their browsing patterns.

Whilst you do not need to allow your browser to accept cookies in order to browse much of our web site or to access many of our services, you must have cookies enabled if you wish to shop online or access any areas reserved for registered users.

Disclosure of information to third parties

By providing your email address you consent to being contacted by the IAM and its affiliated local groups. The IAM will not pass on your details to third parties.

We may disclose some or all of the information collected from you if required to do so by law or other legally binding obligation.

Subject access requests

You have a statutory right of access to accessible personal and/or sensitive personal data that we hold about you. In order to exercise this right, your application must be in writing for security reasons. Please write to the:

Please refer to the information you wish to see giving dates if possible, and enclose your cheque for £6.00 payable to Institute of Advanced Motorists Limited. We will not administer Subject Access Requests by a third party unless accompanied by a written authority of the individual who is the subject of the request.
